Explore the wide-open grasslands east of Flagstaff as we search for sparrows, raptors, and other prairie species along Buffalo Range Road. This driving bird tour will take us to several stock tanks that often attract birds and wildlife. Along the way we’ll look for Horned Lark, Loggerhead Shrike, and a variety of hawks and falcons—with the possibility of spotting a Golden Eagle. Mammals such as pronghorn, Gunnison prairie dogs, elk, and even bison may also make an appearance.

Date: Saturday April 18, 2026

Time: 8:00–12PM (noon)

Meeting Point: Shell Gas Station at Exit 213 on I-40 East (Flagstaff). We will meet here and carpool to the birding location.

Directions: From Flagstaff, take I-40 east to Exit 213 and meet at the Shell station. From there we will drive about 12 miles east to Exit 225 (Buffalo Range Road), then continue approximately 10 miles on the dirt road toward Raymond Ranch, stopping at several stock tanks along the way.

What to Bring: Binoculars, water, snacks, sunscreen, and clothing appropriate for the weather. Participants may drive their own vehicle if they need to leave early.

About the Location: Buffalo Range Road passes through expansive grassland habitat east of Flagstaff. The stock tanks and open prairie attract a variety of sparrows, raptors, and other grassland species, as well as mammals such as pronghorn and prairie dogs.
