Audubon in ActionNest Box Improvements at Kachina WetlandsKachina Wetlands is home to a dozen nest boxes intended for occupancy by Western Bluebirds. The boxes were initially installed by Doug Levasseur four years ago and have been monitored each summer since by NestWatch volunteers. Six of the boxes were home to a total of 35 Western Bluebird fledglings in 2024. In late October, Matt Anderson and Liz Brauer, NAAS members and frequent visitors to the wetlands, joined Doug to replace five older nest boxes at Kachina Wetlands. The new boxes are based on a Mountain Bluebirds Trail Conservation Society plan designed to accommodate both Western and Mountain Bluebirds. While Mountain Bluebirds are relatively infrequent visitors to the wetlands, it is hoped that these new boxes will entice some of them to call the place home.
