Butterfly Tagging Demo and Talk, Fri Sept 20, 8:30-9:30 AM, Page Springs Fish Hatchery Visitor Center's Monarch Waystation Garden

Numbered tags from the Southwest Monarch Study's citizen science program are used to track Fall-migrating Monarchs on their journey to their overwintering locations in California and Mexico. Come see how it's done, practice tagging on some fake Monarchs, and find out how to order your own tags to participate. Learn how this tagging program has contributed to Monarch conservation in the southwest, and get an update on new digitally coded radio tags being used to track migrating Monarchs. Listen to some accounts of incredible migration feats by Monarch butterflies. Please let presenter know you will be attending at monarchtagger@gmail.com.

Note: This is not a hike, so please bring a folding chair or stool. Restrooms onsite.

Presenter: Monarch Conservation Specialist, Denise Gibbs. Denise tagged over 10,000 migrating Monarchs at Chincoteague NWR, Assateague Island VA, from 1997 - 2017
