Hike ‘n Bird – FSR 237: Saturday, August 26th at 7:30 - 11:30 am

Hike ‘n Bird – FSR 237: Saturday, August 26th.

Meet at the junction of FSR 237 and Hwy 89A at 7:30am

(Always check back here to find out if an event has been canceled due to lightning or heavy rain!)

If you are coming from Flagstaff, head South on 89A toward Oak Creek Canyon for about 7 miles (if you get to FSR 535, you've gone too far.) If you are coming up out of Oak Creek Canyon, look for FSR 237 on your right shortly after the top of the rim. Pull over cattle guard and look for parked cars there before the road curves.

We’ll meet just beyond the cattleguard, then at 7:35, caravan 1.5 miles to parking spot. Hike for approximately 4 miles (2 out, 2 back) taking approximately 4 hours depending on weather conditions. This is moderate for experienced hikers and difficult for non-hikers. The ground is often uneven with rocks, creek crossing and uphill sections. There is a scramble that requires either hiking poles or seated descent (on the buttocks).

We’ll be listening for birds while hiking and stop frequently to attempt to find heard birds. As we go, participants will be increasing their knowledge of bird calls and songs. We’ll stop for a snack at the turnaround. Wear hiking boots/shoes. Bring poles, water, snacks, hat, bug repellant, hiking poles, rain gear, etc. Possible species include: Three species of Nuthatches, Red-faced Warbler, Painted Redstart, Steller’s Jay, Mountain Chickadee, Band-tailed Pigeon, Northern Flicker, hoping for Northern Pygmy Owl and American Three-toed Woodpecker.

Contact Leader: Kay Hawklee for more info: (text) 432-703-0007 or email: birdnaas@gmail.com; or khawklee@gmail.com for more information. The only restrooms are behind trees - have a "poop plan" ;-) No facilities available. If we hear thunder or have rain, we will turn back immediately. Check weatherunderground.com for info.
